Science Fiction is a broad umbrella term for a genre that is "based on imagined future scientific or technological advances and major social or environmental changes" (Oxford Dictionary). It is my second favorite genre under fantasy, and those two genres tend to tango together.
On Goodreads, there is a list voted on by the community of the Top Science Fiction. No, over 3,000 books seems like a lot, but the genre has been around since at least 1818 with the publishing of Frankenstein by Mary Shelly.

Most of what I have read I can break down into three categories: Space/Aliens, Dystopian, Transformation, and Inventions.
Space/Aliens
The Martian: Andy Weir
The Ultimate Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy: Douglas Adams
Dune: Frank Herbert
Ender’s Game: Orson Scott Scar
SAGA (1-5): Brain K. Vaughan
Slaughter-House Five: Kurt Vonnegut
The Sirens of Titan: Kurt Vonnegut
The Host: Stephenie Meyer
Dystopian
Fahrenheit 451: Ray Bradbury
War of the Worlds: H.G. Wells
The Road: Cormac McCarthy
Cell: Stephen King
Handmaid’s Tale (1-2): Margaret Atwood
I am Legend: Richard Matheson
The Giver: Lois Lowry
World War Z: Max Brooks
1984: George Orwell
The Hunger Games (1-3): Suzanne Collins
Watchmen: Alan Moore
Maximum Ride (1-5): James Patterson
Matched (1-3): Ally Condie
Amped: Daniel H. Wilson
Divergent (1-3): Veronica Roth
The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys: California: Gerard Way
Breakfast of Champions: Kurt Vonnegut
Transformation
The Invisible Man: H.G. Wells
Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde
The Metamorphosis: Franz Kafka
How to Stop Time: Matt Haig
Inventions
Frankenstein: Mary Shelley
Cat’s Cradle: Kurt Vonnegut
The Time Machine: H.G. Wells
20,000 Leagues Under the Sea: Jules Verne
I definitely have a few anticipated reads as well! Have you read any on the list? Are there any you would argue are not science-fiction?
